More pets are lost over the 4th of July Holiday than any other time of year

Here’s the quick list to protect your pet:

  1. Do not bring pets to fireworks events.

  2. Keep pets at safe at home: inside, away from doors and windows.

  3. Drown out loud noises with a TV or radio.

  4. Make sure your pet is wearing a current I.D. tag and license.

  5. Make sure your pet is microchipped and the registration is up to date with the microchip company.

Be aware of other Holiday dangers that can harm your pet:

  1. Unattended alcohol beverages are a poison risk for pets.

  2. Food bags (i.e. chip and treat bags) must be kept away from pets and young kids to prevent suffocation hazards.

  3. Matches and lighter fluid should be kept away from pets, they are toxic to animals.

  4. Sunscreen products containing DEET can cause neurological problems in pets, instead use sunscreen and/or insect repellant designed for pets.

  5. Citronella candles, tiki torch oils and insect coils should be kept out of pet’s reach.

  6. The luminescent substance inside glow jewelry can cause stomach irritation in pets.

  7. Chemicals in fireworks can be toxic to pets, even ashes from the fireworks can harm them.

If your pet is lost, report that to the MCACC “Lost and Found” line at 602-372-4598. Animals reported there will be placed on their interactive map for people to search. MCACC asks for the general public to come in and physically walk up and down the aisles of the kennels to look for their pets. Any pet that has a microchip will be driven straight home and avoid coming into the shelter. The only animals they will bring in are those where the owner cannot be located. Also, visit pets.maricopa.gov for more tips how to best find him or her.
